How Hot Is Too Hot for a GPU? Safe Temperature Limits

Last updated:

A GPU is too hot when its core temperature goes above 90°C, or its hotspot (junction) temperature goes above 105–110°C on AMD cards. At these temperatures the GPU reaches its rated maximum and starts thermal throttling. For long gaming sessions, the ideal GPU temperature stays below 85°C.

What GPU temperature is too high?

A GPU temperature is too high when it reaches the card’s official maximum temperature. The table below shows 5 temperature bands for GPU core temperature under load:

GPU core temperatureStatusWhat happens
Below 80°CGoodFull boost clocks, quiet fans
80–85°CWarm but normalFull performance on most cards
85–90°CHotClose to the throttle point on NVIDIA cards
90–95°CToo hotThermal throttling, lower frame rates
95°C+Danger zoneCrashes or emergency shutdown

What is the maximum temperature of current GPUs?

The maximum temperature of current GPUs is 85–90°C for NVIDIA GeForce cards and 110°C hotspot (junction) for AMD Radeon cards. These are NVIDIA’s and AMD’s official limits:

GPUOfficial maximum temperature
RTX 509090°C
RTX 508088°C
RTX 5070 Ti88°C
RTX 507085°C
RTX 5060 Ti87°C
RTX 506089°C
RTX 4060 to RTX 409090°C
Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000 series110°C junction (hotspot)

The complete list is in the GPU temperature chart by model.

What happens when a GPU gets too hot?

A GPU that gets too hot goes through 4 stages of protection and damage:

  1. Thermal throttling: the GPU lowers boost clock and voltage to stay at its maximum temperature, so frame rates drop.
  2. Instability: overheated memory or core causes crashes, black screens and GPU artifacting.
  3. Emergency shutdown: the PC turns off when temperature keeps rising past the safe limit.
  4. Faster wear: years of high heat dry thermal paste, wear fan bearings and stress solder joints.

Modern GPUs protect themselves, so a single overheating event rarely causes permanent damage. Running at the throttle point every day costs performance and shortens component life.

What are the signs of an overheating GPU?

There are 5 common signs of an overheating GPU:

  • Frame rate drops after 10–20 minutes of gaming, not at the start.
  • Fans run at 100% and sound loud.
  • GPU clock speed falls while temperature sits at the maximum.
  • Random crashes, black screens or restarts during games.
  • Flickering, colored dots or lines on screen.

To confirm overheating, check your GPU temp with HWiNFO, game for 20 minutes and read the Maximum column.

How do you fix a GPU that runs too hot?

You fix a GPU that runs too hot with these 8 steps, ordered from easiest to hardest:

  1. Confirm the fans spin under load. A stopped fan is the most common cause; see GPU fans not spinning.
  2. Clean the dust from the heatsink, fans and case filters with compressed air.
  3. Improve case airflow with at least one front intake fan and one rear exhaust fan.
  4. Set a custom fan curve in MSI Afterburner so fans speed up earlier.
  5. Undervolt the GPU to cut 5–10°C with little or no performance loss; see how to undervolt a GPU.
  6. Cap the frame rate to your monitor’s refresh rate.
  7. Remove any overclock, because overclocking raises power and heat; see what overclocking a GPU does.
  8. Replace thermal paste and pads on cards older than 3–4 years, or when hotspot reads more than 25–30°C above core.

How hot is too hot for GPU memory?

GPU memory is too hot above about 100–105°C memory junction temperature. GDDR6X and GDDR7 memory normally runs at 80–95°C under load. Fresh thermal pads or extra airflow over the backplate lowers memory temperature.

FAQ

Is 90°C too hot for a GPU?

Yes, for most NVIDIA cards 90°C is the maximum rated temperature, so the GPU throttles there. It is not instantly harmful, but cooling should be improved.

Is 85°C safe for a GPU?

Yes. 85°C is within the official limit of nearly all current GPUs, though it leaves little headroom.

Is 60°C too hot for a GPU while gaming?

No. 60°C is a cool gaming temperature; see is 60°C too hot for a GPU while gaming.

Can overheating permanently damage a GPU?

Rarely. Modern GPUs throttle and shut down before heat damages the chip, but long-term high heat shortens the life of fans, pads and memory.
