GPU Sag: Is It Bad and How Do You Fix It?

Last updated:

GPU sag is the downward bend of a graphics card’s far end caused by its own weight, because the card is held only by the PCIe slot and the bracket screws at the back of the case. Mild GPU sag of 1–3 mm is mostly cosmetic; heavy sag of 5 mm or more stresses the card’s PCB, solder joints and the PCIe slot.

Is GPU sag bad?

Yes, heavy GPU sag is bad over time. There are 4 problems it can cause:

  • Cracked PCB traces near the PCIe connector.
  • Broken solder joints under the GPU or memory chips.
  • A damaged PCIe slot on the motherboard.
  • Poor contact that causes black screens or a GPU not detected; see how to reseat a GPU.

Mild sag that does not increase over time rarely causes problems.

What causes GPU sag?

GPU sag is caused by 3 factors:

  1. Card weight: high-end cards weigh 1.5–2.5 kg.
  2. Card length: long cards (300 mm+) create more leverage on the slot.
  3. Mounting design: only the rear bracket and PCIe slot hold the card.

Moving or shipping a PC multiplies the force on a sagging card.

How do you check for GPU sag?

You check for GPU sag by looking at the card from the side or placing a phone level app on top of it. If the far end is lower than the bracket end, the card sags. A gap of more than 3 mm is worth fixing.

How do you fix GPU sag?

You fix GPU sag with one of 5 methods:

  1. Install a GPU support bracket under the card’s far end.
  2. Use the anti-sag bracket that came with your card.
  3. Tighten the bracket screws while lifting the card to level.
  4. Switch to a vertical GPU mount.
  5. Choose a card with a stiff backplate and frame; see GPU backplate.

Does GPU sag affect performance?

No, GPU sag does not affect performance directly. Performance problems appear only if sag damages the slot or causes poor contact.

Should you remove the GPU before moving a PC?

Yes, you should remove a large GPU or add solid support before moving or shipping a PC. Read how to remove a GPU.

FAQ

Is a little GPU sag normal?

Yes. 1–2 mm of sag is normal on large cards.

Can GPU sag break the PCIe slot?

Severe sag, especially during transport, can damage the slot or the card’s connector.

Does a reinforced PCIe slot stop sag?

No. Steel-reinforced slots resist damage better but do not stop the card from bending.
