GPU Backplate: What It Does and Do You Need One?

Last updated:

A GPU backplate is a metal or plastic plate fixed to the back of a graphics card’s circuit board (PCB). A GPU backplate does 3 jobs: it stiffens the card against bending, protects the PCB from damage, and, when fitted with thermal pads, helps cool the memory and power components on the back of the card.

What does a GPU backplate do?

A GPU backplate does 4 things:

  1. Adds rigidity, reducing GPU sag and PCB flex.
  2. Protects components from screwdrivers, short circuits and dust.
  3. Spreads heat from memory chips and VRMs on the back of the PCB when thermal pads connect them to the plate.
  4. Improves appearance, often with logos or RGB lighting.

Does a GPU backplate help with cooling?

A GPU backplate helps with cooling only when it has thermal pads between the PCB and the plate. Metal backplates with pads can lower memory temperature by a few degrees on cards with memory on both sides of the PCB. A backplate without pads has little cooling effect. Check memory temperatures with how to check GPU temp.

Is a metal backplate better than plastic?

Yes. A metal backplate (aluminum) is better than plastic because it adds more stiffness and conducts heat. Plastic backplates are mainly protective and decorative.

Do all graphics cards have a backplate?

No. Most mid-range and high-end graphics cards have a backplate, but many budget and low profile graphics cards do not.

Can you add a backplate to a GPU?

Yes. You can add a backplate to a GPU when a model-specific backplate exists, usually sold with water blocks by brands such as EKWB and Alphacool. Generic backplates do not fit, because screw holes differ between card models.

Does a backplate stop GPU sag?

A backplate reduces GPU sag but does not stop it on heavy cards. Use a GPU support bracket or a vertical GPU mount for full support.

FAQ

Should I remove my GPU backplate?

No. Removing the backplate removes protection and stiffness, and can void the warranty.

Do backplates trap heat?

Backplates without pads can trap a little heat, but well-designed backplates have vents and pads.

Is a backplate needed for a vertical mount?

No, but a backplate improves the card’s appearance and protection in any orientation.
