Do GPUs Come With Power Cables?

Last updated:

No, graphics cards do not usually come with power cables. The power supply (PSU) provides the PCIe power cables that connect to the GPU. Many graphics cards that use the 12VHPWR / 12V-2×6 connector include an adapter that converts several 8-pin PSU cables into one 16-pin plug.

What power cables does a GPU need?

A GPU needs one of 3 kinds of power connection, depending on its power draw:

GPU power drawConnectionExample cards
Up to 75WNo cable; powered by the PCIe slotGTX 1650, RX 6400
75–300W1–2 PCIe 8-pin (6+2-pin) cablesRTX 5060, RX 9060 XT, RX 9070 XT
250–600W1 x 12V-2×6 (16-pin) cable or adapterRTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, RTX 5090

What comes in the box with a graphics card?

A graphics card box usually contains 4 items: the graphics card, a quick start guide, sometimes a 12V-2×6 adapter and sometimes a GPU support bracket. Power cables, display cables and drivers on disc are rarely included.

Can you use a 6+2-pin cable for an 8-pin GPU?

Yes. A 6+2-pin PCIe cable is an 8-pin PCIe cable split into two parts so it also fits 6-pin cards. Clip the 2-pin part next to the 6-pin part and plug it into the 8-pin socket on the GPU. Do not confuse it with the 8-pin EPS (CPU) cable, which has a different layout.

What is the 12V-2×6 (12VHPWR) connector?

The 12V-2×6 connector is a 16-pin power connector that delivers up to 600W through one cable. It replaced the earlier 12VHPWR design with shorter sensing pins for safer seating. ATX 3.0 and ATX 3.1 power supplies include a native 12V-2×6 cable; older PSUs use the adapter supplied with the card.

Should you use one cable or two for an 8-pin GPU?

You should use two separate PCIe cables for a GPU with two 8-pin sockets when possible. A single cable with two daisy-chained connectors works for cards under about 225W, but separate cables share the load better on high-power cards.

How do you know if your PSU can power a GPU?

You know your PSU can power a GPU when its wattage meets the GPU maker’s recommendation and it has the right connectors. NVIDIA recommends 550W for the RTX 5060, 650W for the RTX 5070, 750W for the RTX 5070 Ti and 1000W for the RTX 5090.

Can you use a GPU without power cables?

You can use a GPU without power cables only if it draws 75W or less, such as a low profile graphics card. A card with power sockets will not work, or will warn you, if the cables are missing.

FAQ

Do GPUs come with PCIe cables?

No. PCIe power cables come with the power supply.

Do I need to buy a power cable for my new GPU?

Usually not, if your PSU has enough PCIe connectors. Modular PSUs need their own brand’s cables.

Is a 12VHPWR adapter safe?

Yes when fully inserted and not bent sharply near the connector.
